About: Dr. Terry W. Dorsett

Terry grew up in central Illinois but moved to Lynchburg, Virginia as a teenager. It was there that he became active in one of America’s largest congregations, Thomas Road Baptist Church. While in seminary he joined the pastoral staff at that church and learned important concepts about how to reach a community for Christ. Though Terry enjoyed his time in that congregation, he realized that he wanted to impact individual lives in a deeper way than was possible in a mega-church setting. This desire began his journey toward the small church and a more relationship based ministry.

Terry, and his wife Kay, spent time in youth ministry in South Carolina before moving to Vermont as church planting missionaries with the North American Mission Board (SBC) in 1993. Upon first arriving in Vermont they worked in village ministry in the small community of Washington, VT. In 2001, Terry became the Director of Missions/Church Planting Catalyst for the Green Mountain Baptist Association. In that role he helps plant churches and plan strategic evangelism projects across the state.

Terry and Kay partnered with two other families in 2004 to start Faith Community Church. After several months of Bible study in the Dorsett home, the small group began Sunday morning worship services in the conference room of a local motel. As the church grew they were able to buy their own building in 2007. The church has grown to be the second largest Southern Baptist church in the state of Vermont and has created a unique internship program through which the numerous Southern Baptist churches are being planted across the state. Terry continues to serve as the bivocational pastor of this church while also serving as the Director of Missions/Church Planting Catalyst for the Baptist association.

Terry has three passions in ministry:

  1. Helping people who have never been in church discover a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ.
  2. Reaching young adults for Christ and then mentoring them into leaders to reach the next generation.
  3. Helping small churches realize their dreams of doing big ministry through the power of the Holy Spirit. Terry believes this can be done most effectively by developing ministry teams within the church and through creating partnerships with other liked minded churches and organizations.
