About: Barbara Ann Derksen

Barbara DerksenWatching the expressions on the faces of her readers, as well as answering questions about her characters, is what drives author and speaker, Barbara Ann Derksen to write yet another book and another. Her favorite genre is murder mystery but each book brings forth characters who rely on God as they solve the puzzle in their life.

Barbara’s devotionals are sought after each year when she publishes a new one that reflects what God has placed on her heart. From Straight Pipes, her first, to More Than Bells, Preparation for Prayer, the latest, Barbara’s devotions take people to the place where God can touch their heart and leave a lasting impression. When people stop by her table for the latest, they talk to her about using the devotions in their chapter meetings, or their personal devotions. Some men return at their pastor’s request because the books are used as launch pads for men’s bible study. Many copies have been passed on to new believers as discipling tools.

Born in Canada, Barbara lived in the US for 12 years. There her writing surfaced as she worked under contract as a journalist for six years with over 2500 articles published in newspapers and magazines during that time. Meeting and interviewing people, digging for the hidden gems in their lives, made those years informative as well as instructive. She began attending Colorado Christian Writer’s Conferences and each year, under the tutelage of great Christian writer’s like James Scott Bell, Angela Hunt, and others, she honed her skills.

Barbara has developed a speaking platform and has spoken across the US and in Manitoba, Canada for women’s groups and in church services on topics such as The Writing Experience, working in the ministry of Christian Motorcyclists Association, Love, Parenting, Time Management, and a host of others.

With 17 books to her credit, one currently inactive and awaiting revision, each one surpasses the last, according to her readers. They look forward to discovering the new characters in a new series Finders Keepers. Book One – Shadow Stalker – will be released mid-May, 2013

Writing, however is simply a tool to be used in the ministry she shares with her husband. With his gift of music (he sings country gospel), Barbara and her husband operate CatchFire Ministries, a ministry to bikers through Christian Motorcyclists Association. They travel for four to five months every summer in the US and the rest of the time in Canada where they seek to inspire, encourage and invite people into a deeper ministry with Jesus Christ. They also minister at Veterans Homes and churches along the way and are about to begin a ministry to Juvenile offenders incarcerated at Manitoba Youth Center. The mysteries include a gospel message that opens her readers to the possibility of reading books written from a Christian World view and supply funds for CatchFire.

About: Hollie Marie

Hollie MarieHollie Marie’s first devotional book, 31 Rays of Hope, was published in February 2013 and for her it was a dream come true that she had previously laid to rest. Hollie first began writing and sending out devotionals roughly a decade ago and had attempted to be published several times throughout the years. However, as she found out, it was a dream that was meant to be, just not in the time she had planned. Roughly four years after she had given up hope of ever being published, a friend recommended she submit her writings to Tate Publishing. Not expecting much, she did, however the response back was not what she anticipated, they wanted to publish the book! Thus began the journey in which she hopes will open the doors to many more.

While as Hollie undoubtedly enjoys penning down inspirational works, as her desire is that everyone comes to know the Truth of the Savior, she has a passion for helping out those that are homeless. She partakes in a weekly ministry in the area of Little 5 Points (Atlanta, GA), in which she (along with a few others), provide breakfast, a sermon and a hot lunch for those that are in need (or who just want to come hang out). In addition, she helps out a few other like-focused established organizations. It is her dream to have her own “official” charity, and a homeless center to go with it one day. She believes that love is something that can change the world, and that there is no better way to show the truth of Christ, than by living out His love to everyone/everywhere. As she says about her outreach, “The mission of *LoveIs* is to share the love of God, by sharing the Word of God and to show the Love of God through action”.

About: Liz Ciccone

Liz CicconeLiz Ciccone, award-winning writer and the founder of Soul conversations, describes herself in the following way, “I am God’s child, God is my Father, Jesus is my Savior and I am the face of Soul Conversations.” However, this was not always the case. Liz didn’t start out her life as a Christian. She lives among a family of nonbelievers to this day. She found herself in the midst of the chaos and turmoil of a very dysfunctional family whose father is an atheist, whose mother believes God is the head of the lottery commission and was a household of anger with incidents of domestic violence.

Her challenges didn’t end there. She also suffers from hydrocephalus, a condition marked by fluid-filled cyst on her brain, requiring 18 surgeries from the ages of five weeks to nine years old. It was from this experience that her faith was laying its foundation. She was always a fiercely independent child. “I CAN DO IT ALL BY MYSELF!” was, and still is her motto today. But there are those things that she knew she couldn’t do ALL BY HERSELF. Those are the times that she was looking for God’s guidance. Of course, this was not at all an easy journey or task. Receiving no guidance from her parents, who are supposed to be the most important influencers in her life and the ones whose responsibility it is to teach her about the importance of a relationship with God, she was left to her own devices which unfortunately, isolated her from the truth that God wanted to share with her. As she grew, they continued to further isolate her and kept her from others when she would try to reach out to the world.

By her teen years, Liz left God for the adversary. She got involved in the occult and divination practices that attracted some very harmful and negative influences into her world. She suffered horrific nightmares from using a Ouija board, she was involve in spell casting and had demonic experiences from time to time. While reading her Bible at one point, she was choked by the demon who was haunting her apartment and while she was still living at home, she experienced knocking on her walls and windows of her bedroom in addition to hearing the demon haunting her saying, “GOD CAN’T HELP YOU NOW!”

This story is not an easy one to share for her, but she feels it’s an important one that all need to hear especially those who are youth and young adults because many times many times, when things escalate to the level she experienced, it’s extremely difficult to overcome. That is why she wants to share the importance of the need to push through those obstacles with all you can to find your way to God, because as she puts it, “You can have all the friends and family you want, you can have all the fame and fortune you want, possessions etc. But if you do have your faith, all that other stuff is just stuff.”

The Discipling Church
Alive in Christ Radio LIVE || Christian Book of the Week:
Author: Michael Duncan, Dr. Jeff Klick, Tony Marino, Brian Whiteside
Title: The Discipling Church

Description:

The Discipling Church is a practical application “disciple-making” guide that defines and clarifies how every Christian can become a true disciple of Jesus Christ. This text was prepared primarily for church leaders, but has been written in such a way so that it may “equip” every Christian and every Christ seeker. “Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer). The Lord Jesus Christ is the very cornerstone of our faith. From the truth found in God’s Word, we have purposefully embedded within the pages of this book the essential elements necessary to carry on the Great Commission of Jesus Christ – namely, to “Make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19, NIV)? We believe in the fact that the world and everything in it has been made by Him, for Him, through Him, and in Him. We take His words, His teachings, His attitudes and His commands as being that of the one true God of the universe – with nothing missing and nothing broken. Evangelism is that work of bringing people face to face with their need for and experiencing a new birth experience in Christ. Salvation, in its most narrow understanding, is a moment-in-time experience by a person of the new birth or conversion to Jesus Christ. At this point in time, the believer receives new life and is “born again” and experiences what the Bible calls, redemption, reconciliation, and justification. God immediately and suddenly brings transformation into his or her life. However, the reality of discipleship is the growth of that new life which comes after the moment of salvation. Discipleship is a lifelong process of applying the gospel and the truth of the Word of God into the believer’s life, with the ultimate objective of becoming and being Christ-like every day. As you make your way through the Table of Contents, you will quickly discover that “The Discipling Church” is divided into two practical primary sections. Section One: A practical panoramic overview relative to the fundamental precepts of what discipleship is combined with why and how we, as Christians, must go and make disciples. This section was researched, developed, and written for those who are in church leadership, those who are the church (the Body of Christ), and those who are still Christ seekers. Section Two: An inspired collection of useful and timely discipleship tools, resources, and solutions. Upon reaching the completion of this book you will be equipped and have the necessary essentials to go forward with Jesus’ Great Commission: to make disciples. All misconceptions, confusions, rationalizations, and objections will have been addressed leaving you, the reader and learner, with one all-important, eternal question: Will you obey? Prayerfully consider your answer for it has eternal ramifications.

Is Confusion Consuming You?

Sylvie HacheWhether you’re a teenager, young adult, single, common-law, married, or the parent of a struggling child, confusion is very painful and oftentimes has very agonizing effects.

Confusion sets in when we don’t know what to do in any given situation. Wisdom is knowledge; knowledge helps us know what to do when we don’t know what to do. Genuine knowledge provides correct answers. Having the right answers eliminates confusion.

It seems understandable to most that there are basic laws and principles we need to follow to ensure success in various areas of our life. To be physically healthy, we need to eat right, exercise and sleep well. To be financially prosperous, we need to get a job, work hard and be reliable — then manage our money by saving, investing and spending wisely. To be relationally successful, we need to love unconditionally and not be selfish. If we require help in any of these areas, we can seek professional support from a health practitioner, physical therapist, financial advisor or relationship counselor.

Then there is another aspect of life — mental and emotional — where a lot of confusion sets in. This area is guided mostly by our feelings, thoughts and opinions. It is also the area most hesitate to get professional support, fearing they will be deemed deficient or labeled with some sort of mental or emotional disorder. However, a great concern for many in engaging a specialist in this field (other than the obvious cost factor) is pouring their heart out and then getting filled back up with bad advice, potentially causing more harm than good.

Yet, there is an expert available for all of us in all these areas of life — one who is honest, truthful and completely trustworthy. One wise beyond anyone else in the world and who will never steer us wrong or give bad advice. One available to help 24/7 — any time, any place, anywhere. This advice is free of charge, yet priceless. All we are required to pay is a willingness to give up what is not working, in order to gain what is. Just like we cannot gain a healthy lifestyle without first giving up an unhealthy one; we cannot gain financial prosperity without first giving up undesirable work ethics and frivolous spending habits. Nor can we gain solid relationships without first giving up selfishness.

If we choose to follow this advice to the word, without faltering, we will be shown a way that is foolproof, successful and profitable. A way that will ensure we’ll be doing what’s right and ultimately reap the greatest benefits and rewards. This way is tried, tested and true. A way set in stone. It is unchangeable and will work today, tomorrow and forever for anybody, regardless of age, nationality, sex, social or economic status, marital status or sexual orientation.

When we first begin following this way, a lot will appear to contradict our own personal beliefs and opinions of what is right and wrong. But ultimately we have a choice: Either trust and believe this new way, or keep following our own thoughts, feelings and opinions. When we empty our self of our own beliefs and fill up with right thoughts instead, that’s when our life will change. Our eyes will become wide open to the truth and we will finally see clearly the right choices to make now and for the future to ensure happiness, success and prosperity in all areas of life — physically, financially, relationally, mentally and emotionally.

The expert is the One who created us. The right way is His way, rather than our way. The choice is ours: to believe and gain expert advice for life, or not believe and risk remaining consumed by confusion for life.

Sylvie Hache embraced the homosexual lifestyle for 13 years before receiving life-altering insight that caused her to turn her life around. She is now dedicated to helping others who currently live a non-straight lifestyle (or who are considering it) to receive this life altering truth and insight so they too, can enjoy the life they were born to live.

Vulnerable and defenseless, her life in a tailspin form an abusive, failed marriage, Sylvie Hache fell into the welcoming arms of the homosexual community, where she embraced the non-straight lifestyle wholeheartedly, even finding and undergoing a civil union with the “woman of her dreams.”

She believed her greatest struggles would be “coming out” and the acceptance of family and society; but when she is met with struggles she cannot overcome, and her life deteriorates into a hellish-merry-go-round, losing everything of value to her, a Christian family comes to the rescue, taking her into their home to live. It is there that she sees a glaring contrast between her emaciated life, and the beautiful, loving, peaceful life of her host family. This is when she comes face to face with an unseen reality she was not aware of, nor expecting to find, leading her to seek truth.
