I quickly wondered, “How is there a blessing in a mess?” And how as Christians we can help to put things back in order.
Hardships such as divorce, drama, sickness, depression, disease all of these are messy. They are also heart wrenching and disruptive to the peaceful Abundant Life God intended for us.
Life is messy because Satan is the “god of this world” (KJV) 2 Corinthians 4:4; In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. The messier he makes things, the more out of control we feel and the better the devil is at forcing his agenda. He can offer his solutions (drugs, alcohol) in the chaos. And those solutions sound good, they sound logical, and suddenly we find ourselves contradicting the written Word of God. The devil’s agenda is smoothly planted parallel to the Word of God. But do not be fooled, error is error.
1 John 4:6b; Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
God wants us to discern truth from error.
When God wrote, by his stripes we were healed. (KJV) Isaiah 53:5; But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
God meant that healing for us in every area of life.
When he wrote, (KJV) 3 John 1:2; Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers, he meant exactly that to with no compromising. The devil is good at convincing us to compromise. Compromise is the opposite of believing God’s promises. Promises that help our lives run smoother and mess-free. There are over 900 promises in the Bible!
Finding the Blessing
When you see that there has been a “Mess” in your life what do you do? How about a change of perspective? When I’m cooking my legendary, (tee he he) Nestle Tollhouse, chocolate chip cookies, I make a mess! Cupboards fly open. Bowls, flour, utensils, pans and even the coffee maker come out to mess up my kitchen. Yes, I have to have coffee with my cookies…don’t laugh, that is of course, unless you do too. It’s an almighty, holy-rolling, cookie-making mess. When I’m done…if I don’t eat too much of the batter, there is a scrumptious taste bud retreat in the end. But in the meanwhile there is upheaval. Life is messy sometimes. It isn’t supposed to be that way all the time.
1 Corinthians 14:4; Let all things be done decently and in order.
Order and decency should be our standard. So how do we get it back? Clean it up.
There are several areas in God’s Word where he “Cleans Up”. Proverbs 6:23; For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. This reproof and correction come when there is a mess. It’s times when God’s children get a little sideways in life, and need to get straightened back out again. The blessing comes in the realization that God knows how to take care of a good ol’ fashioned mess.
I had a situation come up at work with a female co-worker and it got messy fast. Can we just say it? “DRAMA!” I didn’t help things either because I jumped right into the middle of it. This “drama” was my whole world for about three days. I’d come home and complain to my husband. At work, I’d be worried about every little thing. I did this so much that my performance was compromised and my boss got involved. Finally, and I say finally with a large sigh here, I was smart enough to ask God what to do. This was a huge mess! Do you know what came out? “Get your nose out of everyone’s business Terri!” Now that was some reproof and correction! I had to learn;
1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.
Mess-making is now off of my resume’ and life is peace filled again.
My research project answer is; the blessing in a mess is the learning, if we go to God with the mess we have a beautiful opportunity to learn from it. The learning will help us achieve the order and decency we all need.
